Electrical Transmission and Distribution

Electrical Transmission & Distribution Construction

What Is Electrical Transmission & Distribution?

Electrical Transmission & Distribution (T&D) construction involves the installation, repair, and improvement of the underground and overhead systems that move power from generation sources to substations and into local communities. It includes the construction of underground conduit systems, duct banks, manholes, vaults, cable routes, support structures, and overhead poles that form the backbone of the electrical grid.

Stella May performs transmission underground work such as installation and repair of conduit duct banks, concrete-encased duct banks, equipment vaults, and manholes, which often require complex excavation, sheeting, shoring, or trench safety systems. Our work also spans jack-and-bore operations, directional drilling, and large excavations for high-capacity transmission routes.

On the distribution side, Stella May supports both underground and overhead systems. Underground distribution work includes installing manholes, dewatering operations, sidewalk vaults, specialty shoring, and conduit installations or repairs. Overhead distribution services involve working at heights up to 65 feet to install, replace, or remove utility poles and hardware — including conductors, transformers, switches, service cables, and various electrical components. These scopes are frequently completed in dense urban settings where outdated drawings, hidden utilities, and congested corridors require precise coordination and technical awareness.

Distribution overhead, better known as overhead powerlines, is the network of poles, wires, and transformers that delivers electricity to homes, businesses, and communities. Because overhead components are visible and accessible, equipment naturally wears out overtime. Older networks can become less reliable, leading to more frequent outages and increased maintenance. Updating or replacing distribution overhead networks ensures energy continues to be delivered safely and consistently to customers.

The Benefits

High-quality T&D construction ensures the reliable flow of electricity across communities, supporting everything from residential neighborhoods to industrial facilities. Properly built transmission duct banks and conduit systems improve long-term grid reliability by protecting cables from environmental damage, providing thermal stability, and allowing for safe, organized routing of high-voltage lines. Robust manhole and vault installations enable easier access for future maintenance, fault repair, and system expansion.

For distribution systems, well-designed underground construction reduces exposure to external risks such as storms, vehicle impacts, and environmental wear. Specialty shoring, controlled dewatering, and accurate conduit placement help prevent ground settlement, structural failures, and service interruptions. Distribution overhead is an essential part of the power grid, carrying electricity long distances and connecting customers to a broader network. Since overhead systems are easily visible and accessible, outages can be diagnosed, isolated, and repaired quickly, restoring service faster, reducing overall downtime.

Overall, strong transmission and distribution construction enhances grid resilience, safety, upgrade potential, and long-term performance. It enables utilities to meet growing energy demands while minimizing outages, improving service reliability, and supporting modern grid improvements such as underground initiatives and system hardening programs.

Why Stella May?

Stella May is uniquely positioned to deliver safe, reliable, and precise T&D construction due to our extensive experience working in urban, suburban, and utility-controlled environments. Our teams routinely perform complex underground work involving multi-way duct banks, deep vault installations, difficult shoring systems, jack-and-bore operations, and long-run conduit systems. All of which are essential components of transmission and distribution infrastructure. We have a proven ability to adapt to challenging conditions, including locating hidden utilities, correcting outdated drawings, and completing work in narrow, congested rights-of-way.

Utility, Gas, Electric Contractor: Maryland, Mid-Atlantic USA – Stella May Contracting Our safety culture is one of our defining strengths. With award-winning performance, zero lost-time achievements, and continuous training in OSHA, excavation, confined space, and high-risk work procedures, we ensure every project is executed with the highest standards of protection and professionalism. This is especially important in T&D environments where excavation depth, shoring requirements, pole work, and proximity to live systems demand strict compliance with utility and industry regulations.

Clients choose Stella May because we self-perform critical parts of the transmission and distribution scope, allowing us to maintain control over quality, schedule, and safety throughout every stage of construction. Our proven track record, combined with our deep understanding of underground and overhead utility work, makes us a trusted partner for utilities investing in system upgrades, modernization programs, and long-term infrastructure resilience. We bring the experience, technical depth, and discipline required to build and maintain the systems that power entire communities.

Stella May owns a comprehensive fleet of vehicles and equipment that are used for completing this specialized work to include bucket trucks. We have employees for our Overhead and Underground Transmission & Distribution department who are cross trained to create the necessary underground and overhead crews such as meter & loop crews and splicing crews.
